40-year-old man killed in garment factory fire
A 40-year-old man has died after a fire broke out at a Gandhi Nagar garment factory in Shahdara on Thursday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Sanju, a resident of Bulandshahar district in Uttar Pradesh.
A fire official said he received a call around 3 a.m. about a factory fire, after which six fire trucks were put into service. Police said firefighters could not reach the exact location because the plant is on a narrow street. They said their night patrol personnel rushed to the scene and put out the fire, which started on the first floor, with help from locals.
Deputy Police Commissioner (Shahadra) R. Sathiyasundaram said a man, identified as Sanju, was found unconscious on the first floor of the factory. He was transferred to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said there were no visible burns on the victim’s body, leading them to suspect he may have died from suffocation, but the autopsy will determine the cause exact death.
The premises were used for the manufacture and storage of shirts by a Deepak Jain from Ashok Nagar, and it was visited by a team as part of the inspection, the officer said.
The DCP said legal action would be taken after a report from firefighters.
