Award-winning Howard Coker takes Sonoco forward | New
He said the company is committed to making it new and better.
He said Hartsville is his hometown and it was an easy decision for him.
Coker said during the pandemic people stayed at home to eat; demand for their packaging products has skyrocketed. The company has seen unprecedented demand.
Sonoco is a global supplier of consumer, industrial, healthcare and protective packaging.
Sonoco supplies 90% of the paper used to make toilet tissue tubes, Coker said.
Everyone knows what happened with toilet paper during COVID.
“The demand was great,” he says.
Coker said customers keep asking them to produce more.
“We had to squat down and prepare,” he said.
At the same time, Coker said their industrial side is reaching all-time highs. In between, he said they ended up in a good place.
He said now is the time to expand and update the Hartsville facility.
The first question is always what is fair for shareholders, he said.
“It was the right decision,” Coker said.
The old headquarters building, built in the 1940s, collapsed. Coker said it was not easy to see this happen due to the building’s historical significance to the city and to Sonoco, but it was from the perspective of moving the business into the future. .
