The government ensures the vaccination of RMG workers as a priority
BGMEA President also urged to prioritize Covid-19 vaccines for foreign clothing brand managers and buyers working in Bangladesh
Health Minister Zahid Maleque has assured the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) that garment workers will be vaccinated as a priority once sufficient doses of the vaccine become available in the country.
The assurance was given after a BGMEA delegation led by President Faruque Hassan met with the Minister of Health and asked him to prioritize vaccines for RMG workers as they worked during the pandemic to protect the country’s economy.
The BGMEA president also called for prioritizing Covid-19 vaccines for foreign clothing brand managers and buyers working in Bangladesh, and the minister said this would be considered.
The BGMEA delegation included First Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam, Vice President Md Shahidullah Azim and Vice President Miran Ali.
In addition, Faruque Hassan requested the assistance of the Ministry of Health with regard to the payment of arrears of more than Tk 36 crore to some garment factories which provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Central Medical. Stores Depot (CMSD).
The health minister said the ministry would take the necessary steps to address the problem.
Lokman Hossain Miah, Secretary of the Health Services Division of the Ministry of Health, and Dr ABM Khurshid Alam, Director General of the General Directorate of Health Services (DGHS), were also present at the meeting.
